INSTALLATION
When installing solar panels, there are some options available to you.
Roof mounted panels vs Pole mounted panels

ROOF MOUNTED PANELS
-
More expensive
-
Do not require additional property space
-
Blend in with roof
-
Roof specifications may limit number of panels that can be installed

POLE MOUNTED PANELS
-
Less expensive
-
Require more space on property
-
Available space limit number of panels that can be installed
Most properties use roof mounted solar panels because they do not take up additional space on the property.
Roof mounted panels also tend to blend in with most residential roofing which helps maintain curb appeal of your home.
An important consideration with roof mounted panels is timing. Solar panels today can have a 20-30 years lifetime so putting new solar panels on an old roof is not ideal. For many customers, installing solar panels on your roof is most sensible and economical when also replacing your roof will be discussed with you and some of the cost can be bundled with your solar installation.
Federal, state, and local tax incentives may help reduce the upfront installation cost (https//www.dsireusa.org/)
MAINTENANCE

Generally, there is little to no maintenance associated with solar panels and systems.
Mostly, you just need to make sure that your panels do not have leaves, debris, or other objects covering them as this will reduce the amount of energy they produce. Some manufacturers recommend rinsing the panels with water once a year if it has not rained.
Most solar panels are tested to withstand wind speed associated with category 4 hurricanes and 1 inch hail pieces at high speeds. This makes them fairly durable for Virginia´s climate.
Check with the manufacturer of your solar panels for specifications regarding testing
